There are so many similarities behind our differences
Working with veterans, I’m struck by how similar our challenges are despite different backgrounds and experiences. Many wrestle with finding the same professional fulfillment they had in the military, with bringing their full presence home instead of carrying their work’s weight through the door, or with giving themselves the grace they readily offer others.
I’ve faced these struggles, too. But one thing we all must remember: our military experience should lift us up, not weigh us down. The discipline, adaptability, and leadership we gained through often unique experiences can be powerful tools for navigating life after service - not baggage to carry.
Growth starts with recognizing these challenges, reframing them, and using our strengths to move forward. No matter where we come from, we all need support, perspective, and permission to transition with resilience.
I don’t think this phenomenon is exclusive to the veteran community. Leaving one career for another can bring the same challenges either due to a new environment, an entirely new profession, or climbing the corporate ladder.
